The Four Steps of a CRIA

The Child Rights Impact Assessment in four steps
A Child Rights Impact Assessment (CRIA) consists of four steps. Over the course of these four steps, you will assess the impact of a proposed law, regulation or policy on children’s rights and create a detailed analysis of the interests of the children involved. In your analysis, the interests of children must always come first. You will start by considering how children’s interests could be affected by the proposal, then ask children for their thoughts on the proposal (Step 1). Next, you will identify any other interests that must be protected by the proposed law or policy (Step 2). You will then determine the relative importance of all the interests involved, giving primary consideration to children’s interests (Step 3). Keeping this in mind, you will flesh out your proposal, adjusting it where necessary based on the results of the CRIA. Finally, you will explain your decisions to both the children and the general public (Step 4).

The main question a Child Rights Impact Assessment must answer is:

How will this proposal affect children’s rights, and how can we ensure these rights are given precedence ?
